One of our favorite drinks to enjoy on a cold winter's night (in FL that usually qualifies around 60ºF) is the time ol' hot toddy. Served warm, this spirit-based drink is commonly known as a somewhat *party appropriate* cold & flu remedy. Even though the hot toddy has sorta fallen from its medicinal graces to a mere cold weather cocktail, we're here to revamp its healing powers. Traditional therapeutic ingredients include: whiskey, for a better sleep; honey, to coat the throat and prevent irritation; lemon, to offer immune boosting vitamins; water, as a hydrating base. Then of course there's variations based on taste or regional preferences - our untraditional add-ins had the immune system in mind.
As we've previously discussed the supernatural healing powers of Turmeric, we thought this spice would pair nicely with other toddy appropriate flavors, like cinnamon and clove. Our other extra ingredient, ginger, is part of the turmeric family (both in plant species and super healing powers). Fresh ginger has shown to ease nausea by relaxing the intestinal track, reduce pain and inflammation, and encourage stomach absorption of essential nutrients. Historically, this root has also been used to treat the cold and flu by stimulating the production of sweat - which can release bodily toxins and help ward off infections.
Lastly, we threw hemp seeds into the mix. Granted this falls farthest from the traditional spectrum, but their health benefits make it a worthy additive. Hemp seeds are one of the most complete plant sources for protein, all 10 essential amino acids, and essential fatty acids like omega-6 and omega-3. All that to say, these lil bbys are immune boosting gold. With hemp seeds easily disguised by other flavors, you can either add them via cold-pressed oil, or blending the seeds with the other liquid ingredients of this recipe.
Ingredients:
1 large knuckle of fresh Turmeric Root
1 small knuckle of fresh Ginger Root
1 cinnamon stick
5 whole cloves
3 tbsp raw Hemp seeds
1 large lemon
Honey or maple syrup, to taste
2 cups fresh water alt: tea or apple cider
optional - add your choice of whiskey, or rum
Method:
1. Mix your water (tea or cider) with your hemp seeds in a blender until smooth. Alt: add your turmeric and ginger root knuckles into the blender for a smoother finish.
2. In a large stove pot, add your honey or maple syrup, cloves, cinnamon stick, liquid mixture, and liquor if applicable.
*If you skipped step 1, add in 1 tbsp of hemp seed oil, and fresh shavings or thin slices from your turmeric and ginger root to the stove pot.
3. Bring all of the ingredients to a simmer.
4. Strain mixture and pour into glasses. Garnish with lemon wedges and cinnamon sticks. Enjoy!
